Is Retatrutide legal in Australia?
Retatrutide is not registered on the ARTG, and there is no TGA-approved retatrutide product in Australia. It is an investigational compound that is still in phase 3 clinical trials overseas, so no date has been set for it to become available as a medicine here. When will retatrutide be available in Australia? Nobody can give a date, because retatrutide is not registered on the ARTG and there is no TGA-approved product. A medicine only becomes available in Australia after a sponsor applies to the TGA, the TGA evaluates the quality, safety and efficacy data, and the product is entered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. There is no retatrutide entry on the ARTG at the time of writing.
Where the compound sits in development explains why. The published record runs from a 12-week phase 1b trial in people with type 2 diabetes (published 2022), to two phase 2 trials in obesity and type 2 diabetes (published 2023), to a 40-week phase 3 trial in type 2 diabetes, TRANSCEND-T2D-1 (published 2026). The phase 3 obesity programme, the TRIUMPH studies, was described as ongoing in reviews published in 2025. A regulator normally expects the full phase 3 package before it will evaluate an application, so any Australian registration would follow the completion and reporting of those trials, and then a TGA evaluation of unknown length.
Until then, retatrutide sold in Australia is research material, not a medicine.
