FAQ
What is bacteriostatic water?
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol added. The benzyl alcohol limits bacterial growth, so a vial can be entered more than once. In the lab it is the standard solvent for reconstituting lyophilised peptides.
Where can I buy BAC water in Australia?
Tasman supplies BAC water from Australian stock in 3 mL, 10 mL and 30 mL vials, in packs of several vials, and in bundles with insulin syringes, swabs and sharps containers. It ships with any order.
What is the difference between bacteriostatic water and sterile water?
Sterile water has no preservative and is meant for single use; once opened it should be discarded. Bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which lets the same vial be used several times over a longer period.
What is the difference between BAC water and bacteriostatic saline?
BAC water is water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol. Bacteriostatic saline also contains 0.9% sodium chloride. Most peptide research protocols specify BAC water; use saline only where a protocol calls for it.
How much BAC water do I need for a vial?
The volume depends on the vial size and the concentration the protocol needs. The table on this page gives example volumes by compound and vial size, and the reconstitution calculator works out the concentration for any volume.
Which size should I choose?
A 3 mL vial suits a single 10 mg peptide vial. The 10 mL vial suits larger vials such as NAD+ 500 mg or glutathione, or several smaller vials. The 30 mL vial and the packs suit labs reconstituting many vials.
